Press release no. 27/24 of 28. Mai 2024
2024 European election: active support of roughly 675,000 voluntary poll workers
WIESBADEN – The Federal Returning Officer reports that in the 10th direct election to the European Parliament, which will take place in Germany on 9 June 2024, roughly 675,000 volunteer poll workers will help ensure the proper conduct of the election. They are the bedrock of an election that is organised by the people and as such are the most important pillar of the electoral procedure. The Federal Returning Officer expresses her sincere thanks to all those who will serve as poll workers on electoral boards on 9 June 2024, thus doing a great service to our democracy and, consequently, to all of us.
In the forthcoming European election, there will be approximately 90,000 polling districts (ballot box voting and postal voting). The boundaries of the polling districts are drawn by the municipalities to make it as easy as possible for voters to get to the polling stations. There will be an electoral board consisting of an electoral officer, his or her deputy and three to seven board members at each polling station and for each postal voting district. Some cities require more than 10,000 poll workers to conduct the European election.
The electoral board organises and supervises the proper conduct of the election and, where necessary, explains the election regulations to the public. Once the polling station has closed, the board counts the votes and reports the result to the district or town returning officer. The district or town returning officer determines the provisional election result for the district or town from the first releases and reports this result to the Land returning officer. The Land returning officer, in turn, reports incoming district and town results to the Federal Returning Officer on a rolling basis. The Federal Returning Officer establishes the provisional election result for all of Germany from these figures.
